Exactly What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

 

PID refers to inflammation in a woman's genital organs, surrounding connective tissue and the pelvic peritonea.  The inflammation may be very local or more widely spread.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a very common problem for women and may be acute or chronic.

Pelvic inflammatory diseases can include :

  • Endometritis
  • Myometritis
  • Salpingitis - inflammation or abscessed
  • Salpingo-oophoritis - inflammation or abscessed
  • Pelvic connective tissue inflammation
  • Pelvic abscesses
