How is prostatitis diagnosed?

Diagnostic procedures for prostatitis may include the following:

    * Urine culture involves collecting and evaluating the urine for the presence of white blood cells and bacteria.
    * Collecting and evaluating prostatic fluid for the presence of white blood cells and bacteria.
    * Digital rectal examination - a procedure in which the physician inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to examine the rectum and the prostate gland.
    * Semen culture
    * Cystoscopy - an examination in which a scope to examine the bladder and urinary tract is inserted through the urethra.
