An increasing Prostate gland size is considered a normal part of the aging process. 50% of men will show Prostate enlargement by the age of 60, and as many as 90% by the age of 85. When the prostate enlarges, it acts similarly to a "clip on a hose," constricting the urethra and thus the flow of urine. A healthy human prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The average weight of a normal prostate in adult males is about 11 grams, and can range between 7 and 15grams.
This two-panel drawing shows the normal male urology anatomy and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The left panel shows the normal size of the prostate and how urine flows from the bladder through the urethra. The right panel shows an enlarged prostate pressing on the bladder and urethra, limiting the flow of urine.
