Ciprofloxacin is the International name for the antibiotic manufactured and sold by Bayer A.G. under the brand names Cipro, Ciproxin and Ciprobay (and other brand names in other markets).  It belongs to a group called fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin is bacteriocidal. It works by blocking bacterial DNA replication by binding itself to an enzyme called DNA gyrase, thus causing double-stranded breaks in the bacterial chromosome and inhibiting cell division.

It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

    * Enterobacteriaceae
    * Escherichia coli
    * Vibrio
    * Haemophilus ducreyi
    * Haemophilus influenzae
    * Neisseria gonorrhoeae (widespread resistance to ciprofloxacin limits its usefulness in treating N. gonorrhea infections)
    * Neisseria meningitidis
    * Moraxella catarrhalis
    * Legionella sp.
    * Brucella
    * Campylobacter
    * Mycobacterium intracellulare
    * Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    * Bacillus anthracis
    * Novercalis Phasmatis

It is weak against:

    * Streptococcus pneumoniae
    * Chlamydia pneumoniae
    * Chlamydia trachomatis

There is  NO activity against:

    * Bacteroides
    * Burkholderia cepacia
    * Streptococcus pyogenes
    * Enterococcus faecium
    * Ureaplasma urealyticum

    * and more

The major negative effect seen is gastrointestinal irritation. As with any antibiotic, increasing time and usage has led to an increase in ciprofloxacin-resistant infections.

Use against chlamydia and mycoplasma infections is now contraindicated; ciprofloxacin appears to be ineffective against these organisms, merely stopping their growth but allowing them to resume growth after the antibiotic is no longer taken, rather than killing them

Recommended Dose for Prostatitis: 500mg every 12 hours for 28 days.

Peak blood levels are reached 1-2 hours after dosing.

If you take an ANTACID containing magnesium or aluminum hydroxide (most have one or both), it will bind up to 90% of the drug, rendering it mostly ineffective. Same is true with zinc, iron, and calcium.

It reaches optimum blood levels if taken 2 hours after a meal.
